SEASTARS Sets Sail: Exciting Kickoff in Athens!

SEASTARS Sets Sail: Exciting Kickoff in Athens!

It is with great pride and excitement that we announce a major milestone for Alpha Marine Consulting and our consortium partners – the official launch of the SEASTARS project, here in Athens.

The SEASTARS project, which stands for “SUSTAINABLE EMISSION ABATEMENT STRATEGIES & TECHNOLOGIES FOR ADVANCED REVOLUTION SHIPS,” is an ambitious initiative aimed at making shipping greener and more efficient.

Our goal? A 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (compared to 2008 levels) and a 20% boost in energy efficiency based on 2022 performance.

To achieve this, we’re developing eight vessel designs, including retrofits and new builds, tailored for inland, short-sea, and deep-sea shipping. Key technologies we’ll explore include:

  • Hydrodynamic enhancements (propeller-hull optimization, air lubrication)
  • Advanced machineries (fuel cells, electric motors, solar panels, wind sails, batteries)
  • Alternative fuels & energy treatments (fuel reforming, cold ironing, carbon capture)

A cornerstone of SEASTARS is leveraging Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and a modular, phased assembly approach developed by MARIN.

This will help shipowners reduce emissions while ensuring compliance with future regulations – keeping fleets sustainable and investment risks manageable.

A huge thank you to all our partners for their contributions and to Agnieszka Zaplatka, European Commission Project Officer, for her inspiring speech and ongoing support.

Additionally, we express our deep appreciation to all our partners for their contributions and special appreciation to Strathclyde University for coordinating this initiative.

We also extend our gratitude to the AURELIA team for co-hosting and co-sponsoring the events alongside Alpha Marine Consulting.

Finally a special shout-out to Athina Training Center, for their exceptional hospitality, making our kickoff event a truly memorable experience!
