New Mandatory IMO Pilot Transfer Standards, Entry into Force 1st January 2028!

(recommended compliance starting from 2026)

As a follow-up to our previously issued guidance, we would like to remind Shipowners and Ship Managers of the forthcoming mandatory implementation of

the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Performance Standards for Pilot Transfer Arrangements under SOLAS Regulation V/23 MSC.576(110).

These standards set stringent requirements for the design, installation, inspection, and crew familiarization of pilot transfer arrangements to ensure safe embarkation and disembarkation. Key updates include larger side ropes (20–22 mm, SWL of strong points ≥48 kN), revised thimble locations, type-approved securing devices, mildew-resistant manropes, and specific winch-stowed ladder requirements.

Shipowners and Managers are strongly encouraged to begin compliance planning well in advance of 1 January 2028, particularly where structural modifications or equipment replacement may be required.

Vessels with dry-docking scheduled within 2026 should use this opportunity to prepare and integrate any necessary upgrades.

With experience gained through the successful delivery of more than 45 engineering and retrofit projects, Alpha Marine Consulting is ready to support Shipowners and Ship Managers with compliance evaluations, engineering and structural assessments, arrangement drawings, and verification of regulatory requirements to facilitate timely and efficient compliance.
