Proud to support cleaner operations in dry bulk!
Alpha Marine Consulting PC has completed the engineering study for replacing the existing Diesel Generators onboard a Handysize bulk carrier
with new Daihatsu Diesel Generators and a corresponding Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to achieve IMO Tier III NOx compliance.
Conclusion: The retrofit is feasible, considering the available space within the Engine Room and Engine Casing. Delivered across:
- Phase I, 3D Scanning Survey to secure an accurate as-built baseline
- Phase II, Feasibility Study to verify layouts, clearances, power/weight balance and compliance, and
- Phase III, Detailed Engineering to produce final specifications with class and yard interfaces
Part of evaluations included:
- Precise SCR placement based on OEM mounting, clearance requirements
- Power cable routing and connection to the new Diesel Generators
- Urea (DEF) system integration for the SCR, including tanks, dosing, and lines
- Exhaust piping modification and re-routing to the SCR reactor inlet, outlet
- Structural reinforcements required for SCR foundations, including clash checks with existing piping and surrounding structures
- Mounting method and foundation interface of the Diesel Generators to the vessel’s hull
This retrofit pathway enhances environmental performance while maintaining reliability and serviceability,
future-proofing the vessel for operation in NOx Emission Control Areas.
If you are evaluating Tier III compliance or generator renewals for your fleet, we would be happy to share our approach and lessons learned.
