Advancing Vessel Performance with CFD: Schneekluth Duct Evaluation !
Our latest CFD study using SIEMENS STAR-CCM+ focused on self-propulsion simulations to evaluate the impact of an energy-saving device (ESD),
specifically the Schneekluth duct, on the performance of a 37,500 DWT Bulk Carrier.
The primary objective of Alpha Marine Consulting was to evaluate and enhance the vessel’s hydrodynamic efficiency, targeting a reduction in fuel consumption
and ultimately improving its RightShip GHG Rating. The Scope of Work included:
- 3D modeling of hull and appendages
- CFD model calibration against sea trial data
- Integration and performance evaluation of the Schneekluth duct using CFD
- Calculation of Brake Horse Power (BHP) and Speed–Power curves
Key Findings:
The integration of the Schneekluth duct resulted in up to 3% improvement in overall propulsive efficiency, primarily due to enhanced inflow uniformity.
This improvement reduces the vessel’s delivered power requirements and supports the maritime industry’s transition toward greener, more energy-efficient operations.
At Alpha Marine Consulting, our CFD team leverages advanced simulations to enhance vessel performance, optimize fuel efficiency, and provide actionable insights for energy-saving solutions tailored to your fleet.
Through these analyses, we also support improvements in EEXI compliance and RightShip GHG Ratings, helping your vessels meet global efficiency and environmental standards.
